Review | French Cowboy
Can a perfume awaken a childhood memory… and at the same time stir your appetite?
“The first spray of French Cowboy reminded me of a lipstick I used as a child,” shares a fragrance lover. From the very first moment, the scent reveals what she describes as “a chocolate praline blended with incense.”
Its notes are as unusual as they are intriguing: chili pepper, salted lime, fruity mezcal, cacao absolute, smoky vanilla, and creamy woods. A combination that’s impossible to ignore. “I think the note that brought me back to that memory was the vanilla,” she adds.
Behind this creation is the remarkable perfumer Ashley Santiago, who developed the concept alongside Mathis Molinié, a young French chef. Santiago, originally from San Francisco with Mexican roots, has worked with leading fragrance houses in Paris. For French Cowboy, she drew inspiration from her family’s involvement in mezcal production, incorporating it as one of the fragrance’s defining notes.
The experience goes beyond scent. She shares, “I thought it smelled so delicious that I felt like I had eaten something sweet with chocolate… or that I needed to right then and there.” She also notes, “It might not be the best choice for a café date, as the aromas of coffee and chocolate desserts could cause the fragrance to get lost in the atmosphere.”
For those unfamiliar with the nuances of mezcal, this note may go unnoticed. Still, the perfume leaves a lasting impression. She recalls, “My husband’s first reaction was, ‘it smells like a kitchen.’ But when he smelled it more closely, he said, ‘mmmh… chocolate.’” Days later, when asked to choose between several options, he didn’t hesitate to recommend French Cowboy.
Over time, the fragrance reveals its true character: alluring and subtly seductive. “After a while, I began to appreciate its scent beyond the idea of a praline—and I love it,” she concludes.
French Cowboy is more than a perfume—it’s a sensory experience that moves between the gourmand and the unexpected, between memory and desire.
A scent to be savored… and remembered.
